China Open Upset: Cameron Norrie Falls to Daniil Medvedev, Katie Boulter Defeated by Amanda Anisimova in First Round

Cameron Norrie Eliminated in First Round of China Open by Daniil Medvedev
In a disappointing start to his China Open campaign, British No. 2 Cameron Norrie was defeated by Daniil Medvedev in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Despite Medvedev not showcasing his top performance, Norrie’s unforced errors gave the Russian an easy path to victory.
Medvedev Dominates with Tactical Superiority
Throughout the match, which lasted just over one hour and fifteen minutes, Medvedev broke Norrie’s serve five times, exposing his opponent’s weaknesses, particularly with the forehand. Ranked No. 11 in the world, Medvedev, seeded eighth for the tournament, now progresses to the last 16, where he will face Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Reflecting on the match, Medvedev noted, “I didn’t play badly, I served well except for a couple of games. I had numerous chances to break, and I believe I deserved to win based on my strategy and statistics. I’m pleased to advance.”

Katie Boulter Exits After Second-Round Defeat to Amanda Anisimova
In another blow for British tennis at the China Open, Katie Boulter was overpowered by America’s Amanda Anisimova in a 6-1, 6-3 second-round defeat. Despite a spirited first-round victory over Hailey Baptiste, Boulter struggled against the impressive power of Anisimova, committing seven double faults compared to Anisimova’s two.
Anisimova’s Performance Shines in Beijing
The American closed out the match with a stunning cross-court backhand, leaving Boulter unable to respond. Post-match, Anisimova expressed her enthusiasm for competing in Beijing, “I’m thrilled to be back here; I enjoy playing and really like the city. I hope to continue performing well in the tournament. The fans were incredible, and I look forward to playing in front of them again.”
