Kevin Durant Reveals Potential for Contract Extension with Rockets

Kevin Durant Eyes Contract Extension with Houston Rockets

Kevin Durant’s Ongoing Contract Discussions

The Houston Rockets and NBA star Kevin Durant are in the midst of discussions to extend their partnership beyond the 2025-26 season. Although a concrete agreement has not been reached, signs point to a potential extension materializing soon. During the media day event at Toyota Center, the 15-time NBA All-Star emphasized his intent to remain with the Rockets longer term.

A Natural Fit with the Rockets

Durant, who transitioned to the Rockets following a July 2025 trade, expressed his satisfaction with the move. Having played college basketball at the University of Texas, he appreciates the local support and connections, including those with assistant coach Royal Ivey and scout DJ Augustin. “It feels organic and natural being a Houston Rocket,” Durant remarked, underscoring the city’s welcoming environment.

Reuniting with Coach Ime Udoka

A familiar face, head coach Ime Udoka, has also positively influenced Durant’s decision. Udoka, who previously collaborated with Durant as a lead assistant in Brooklyn, shares a similar basketball philosophy. Durant appreciates Udoka’s understanding of his playing style and mentality, stating, “He always respected that and gave me my space to be me.”

On-Court Excellence

Last season with the Phoenix Suns, Durant delivered an impressive performance by averaging 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. His shooting efficiency was notable, with a 52.7% field goal percentage and 43.0% from beyond the arc. As he enters the final year of his current contract, Durant is set to earn $54.7 million this season.

No Rush in Negotiations

Although general manager Rafael Stone has refrained from commenting on the ongoing contract negotiations, there is no imminent deadline. With the Rockets holding Bird rights, they have the flexibility to exceed the salary cap to secure Durant’s future services.

Looking Ahead

Beyond the potential contract extension, Durant has expressed his desire to extend his NBA career to age 40 and possibly further. His commitment to the Rockets aligns with his long-term goals in the league, paving the way for continued success in Houston.
