Canada Designates India’s Bishnoi Gang as Terrorist Entity

Government Acts to Limit Bishnoi Gang’s Influence in Canada

In a decisive move, Canada has officially listed India’s Bishnoi gang as a terrorist entity, empowering the federal government to seize property and freeze financial assets owned by the group within Canadian borders. The announcement was made by the federal public safety minister, citing the gang’s role in fostering fear and intimidation, particularly within Canadian diaspora communities.

Allegations and Denials: The Indian Government’s Involvement

Last year, Canadian authorities accused agents of the Indian government of collaborating with Bishnoi gang members to commit homicides, extortion, and other violent acts against supporters of the pro-Khalistan movement. These allegations were strongly denied by India, which claimed that Canada had not provided any evidence to substantiate the accusations.

Enhancing Counterterrorism Measures

The new designation strengthens law enforcement capabilities in Canada, allowing them to prosecute terrorist offences such as financing, travel, and recruitment with greater efficacy. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree emphasized the importance of the new tools in combating terror, violence, and intimidation perpetrated by the gang. “Listing this group of criminal terrorists gives us more powerful and effective tools to confront and put a stop to their crimes,” he stated.

Background: The Bishnoi Gang’s Global Reach

The Bishnoi gang, led by 32-year-old Lawrence Bishnoi, has been classified by Canada as a transnational criminal organization. Although primarily operating out of India, the gang is believed to have a notable presence in Canada, particularly in regions with substantial diaspora communities.

Ongoing Efforts and Diplomatic Relations

In India, the Bishnoi gang is involved in a range of criminal activities, including extortion of celebrities, smuggling of drugs and weapons, and targeted assassinations. The designation by Canada follows pressure from political groups and provincial leaders to impose sanctions on the gang. This action coincides with efforts to mend strained diplomatic ties between Canada and India, following the controversial killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023.

Future Collaborations Between Canada and India

As both countries undertake efforts to restore relations, recent diplomatic developments indicate a willingness to cooperate on security matters. High-ranking officials, such as Prime Minister Mark Carney’s national security adviser Nathalie Drouin, have met with Indian representatives to discuss mutual concerns and commit to non-interference, emphasizing a collaborative approach to ongoing investigations.
