UConn’s Dan Hurley Reflects on Leadership Amid a Challenging Season

Conversations with Coaching Legends Inspire Change

UConn men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley opens up in his upcoming book, “Never Stop: Life, Leadership, and What It Takes To Be Great,” about the transformational conversations he had with legendary coaches, including UConn’s women’s basketball icon, Geno Auriemma. Hurley reveals that a challenging stretch during the previous season prompted a reevaluation of his approach to coaching.

Lessons Learned from a Humbling Season

In November, Hurley faced a tough spell as UConn suffered three consecutive losses at the Maui Invitational. During a crucial overtime game against Memphis, Hurley received a technical foul that exacerbated his frustration. This experience compelled him to reconsider his attitude, especially after his wife, Andrea, mentioned that he had crossed a line.

Seeking guidance, Hurley reached out to renowned coaches, including Chicago Bulls coach Billy Donovan and ESPN analyst Seth Greenberg. It was Auriemma’s advice that truly resonated. “He made me really see,” Hurley writes, acknowledging that his ego was affecting his judgment.

A Turning Point in Coaching Philosophy

In his book, Hurley shares the pivotal conversation where Auriemma reminded him of the core joys of coaching. Auriemma urged him to focus on player development and building relationships rather than being fixated only on winning championships. This advice hit home for Hurley, helping him realign his priorities and embrace his leadership role.

Reflecting on Success and Struggles

Hurley also recounts how, after consecutive championship wins and an offer from the Los Angeles Lakers, he experienced a period where everything seemed to go his way—until the reality of the Maui losses set in. The humbling experience became a catalyst for personal growth and reflection.

“I unraveled some out there,” Hurley admits in an interview with Emegypt, detailing how Auriemma’s insights acted as a stabilizing force. This realization helped Hurley come to terms with the team’s limitations, maintaining a positive outlook despite setbacks.

Reaffirming Commitment to UConn

Hurley reveals he considered resigning after the team’s season-ending loss to Florida. Exhausted by the pressures of modern college basketball, including the challenges posed by the transfer portal and NIL policies, he thought about stepping back. However, he ultimately decided to stay, motivated by the dedication of players like Jaylin Stewart and Solo Ball who pledged their commitment to the team.

“Being the coach at UConn changed my life,” Hurley states, acknowledging the profound impact of the role on his career and personal growth.

“Never Stop: Life, Leadership, and What It Takes To Be Great,” co-authored with Ian O’Connor, is set for release on September 30, offering readers an in-depth look at Hurley’s journey and the universal challenges of leadership in sports.
