Apartment Building Collapse in the Bronx Sparks Emergency Response
Partial Collapse in Bronx Leaves Residents on Edge
Emergency crews swiftly responded to a partial collapse of an apartment building in New York City’s Bronx borough on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred at a public housing apartment building on Alexander Avenue when an incinerator shaft collapsed around 8:10 a.m. ET. This was reported by NYC Deputy Mayor Kaz Daughtry on the social platform X.
Preliminary Investigation Points to Explosion
Initial investigations suggest that the collapse might have been triggered by an explosion, as stated by Mayor Eric Adams during a press conference. Firefighters arrived shortly after an explosion was reported just after 8 a.m., according to Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker. They discovered a significant structural collapse linked to the building.
No Injuries Reported, Cause Remains Under Investigation
Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities have been confirmed. Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson noted that the incident took place in the boiler room. Video footage from the site showcased a large breach on the building’s side, underscoring the severity of the collapse.
Evacuation Measures for Resident Safety
The ongoing investigation aims to identify the cause of the incident, as highlighted by Deputy Mayor Daughtry. As a safety measure, residents in apartments F and G are being evacuated to a nearby community center, ensuring their well-being. Con Edison has proactively shut off gas supply as part of the safety precautions.
Calls for Accountability and Safety Measures
NYC Mayor Adams has requested residents to steer clear of the area while building inspections proceed. Assemblymember Amanda Septimo has called for accountability, emphasizing that reliance on luck should not dictate community safety measures. She stressed the need for resource allocation to address infrastructure issues, such as boiler repairs and elevator replacements, and called for a thorough evaluation of the incident to ascertain responsibility.
