BBC Pop Music TV Launches Captivating Documentary Bowie In Berlin

Engaging Documentary to Celebrate David Bowie’s Berlin Era
Exploring David Bowie’s Transformative Berlin Years
BBC Two and BBC iPlayer are set to honor the legendary David Bowie with a compelling 90-minute documentary titled “Bowie in Berlin” (working title) next fall. This film commemorates the 50th anniversary of Bowie’s arrival in Berlin, an era in which the renowned artist retreated from the limelight to reinvent himself amidst the backdrop of Cold War Berlin from 1976-1978.
Produced by Renowned Filmmakers
A collaboration between Mindhouse and Blackstar Films, “Bowie in Berlin” is executive produced by notable figures Louis Theroux and Mandy Chang and directed by Francis Whately. Whately, known for his previous works on Bowie, brings the musician’s Berlin period to life through Bowie’s own words and those of four influential women in his life during that time — Clare Shenstone, Romy Haag, Sarah-Rena Hine, and Sydne Rome.
Unique Insights from Close Companions
Each woman provides intimate insights into Bowie’s personality, artistry, and character, adding depth to his story during this pivotal moment in his life. As Jonathan Rothery, Head of BBC Popular Music TV, states, “I’m very proud to be bringing audiences such a unique film. ‘Bowie in Berlin’ will shed new light on one of the most important artists in musical history.”
The Dream Project for Louis Theroux
Louis Theroux views this documentary as a dream project. He praises Francis Whately’s previous Bowie films as the epitome of music documentaries and emphasizes how perfectly suited Whately is to explore Bowie’s Berlin years. By focusing on the women in Bowie’s life during this period, the film provides a unique perspective on a crucial phase in the musician’s career.
The Crucible of Bowie’s Regeneration
Berlin symbolizes a period of regeneration for Bowie, where he reached a turning point and created some of his most authentic music. This documentary not only explores his artistic evolution during these years but also highlights his personal growth and self-reinvention without the personas he had previously adopted.
“Bowie in Berlin” promises to be a captivating exploration of an era that defined one of music’s most iconic figures, offering audiences fresh insights and a deeper understanding of Bowie’s impact on the world of music and beyond.
