Alaska Snow Alert: NWS Forecasts Up to 9 Inches of Snow in Key Regions
Alaska Braces for Early Winter: NWS Issues Snowfall Advisory
Winter Weather Advisory for Interior Alaska
The National Weather Service (NWS) has alerted residents of interior Alaska about an impending winter weather scenario. Regions such as the White Mountains, high terrain south of the Yukon River, and Chatanika River Valley, along with sections of the Steese and Elliott highways, are expected to witness snowfall accumulation up to 9 inches from Thursday afternoon through Friday evening.
Hazardous Travel Conditions Expected
With the advisory in place, travelers in the area should prepare for challenging driving conditions. “Plan on slippery road conditions,” cautioned the advisory. It also pointed out that the snowy conditions might impact Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes, urging motorists to reduce speed, exercise caution, and regularly check Alaska’s 511 system for the latest road updates.
Safety Tips for Pedestrians and Commuters
The NWS Fairbanks advises those traveling on foot to remain cautious as well. “If you are going outside, especially watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces may be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury,” they reported.
Early Snowfall in Fairbanks
The snowy conditions come on the heels of recorded early-season snowfall; over the weekend, Fairbanks noted 1.2 inches. NWS Fairbanks commented, “According to records, the Fairbanks area typically gets their first inch of snow on October 9, so we are about two weeks ahead of schedule.”
Forecast of Moderate to Heavy Snowfall
The weather service has forecasted moderate to heavy snowfall especially for the White Mountains, with significant impacts on the Steese and Eagle Summits and the Upper Chatanika Valley from Thursday evening into Friday night. Mixed precipitation may occur at lower elevations, according to the latest reports.
Continuing Updates from NWS
The advisory remains active until Friday night. The NWS will provide ongoing updates as the storm conditions evolve, urging residents to stay informed through their website and local news channels for the latest developments.
