Gus Macker Tournament Suspended for Two Years: What to Know

Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament Paused for Two Years in Jamestown
The beloved Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament is officially on hold for at least two years, as the Jamestown City Council approved a resolution during their recent voting session. The tournament’s local sponsor, Collaborative Children’s Solutions, initiated the request to amend their current agreement regarding the event.
Details of the Resolution and Future Considerations
The council’s resolution enables Mayor Kim Ecklund or another designated representative to negotiate amendments to the contract with Collaborative Children’s Solutions. Due to recent evaluations, it has been decided that the tournament will not be taking place in 2026.
A Brief History of the Gus Macker Tournament
The Gus Macker tournament has a rich history, originating in Michigan in 1974. It made its debut in Jamestown in 1997, and until 2011, The Resource Center sponsored the event. Following a partnership agreement in 2024, Collaborative Children’s Solutions took over sponsorship responsibilities.
According to Mayor Ecklund, the tournament’s financial viability has become a growing concern. “It’s just become not economical … competing with ourselves at the same time as Lucy Fest and all those other events,” she mentioned after the council meeting, highlighting the challenges in securing both volunteers and team participation.
Impact of the Hiatus on Local Basketball Community
The hiatus is particularly significant because Collaborative Children’s Solutions cannot facilitate a one-year break, given the tournament’s requirement for multi-year commitments. As a result, the event will be suspended at least until 2026. The contract amount for 2026 has been adjusted from $65,000 to $55,000 as part of this resolution.
Past and Future Events
The Gus Macker tournament was historically held in downtown Jamestown for nearly two decades, starting in 1997. After a brief hiatus and a switch to an in-house event called “Street Jam,” the tournament returned in 2017 and 2018, leading to its recent sponsorship by Collaborative Children’s Solutions in 2023. It successfully hosted tournaments through 2025.
Looking Ahead: Community Engagement and Alternatives
As the Jamestown basketball community looks forward, they are keen to explore alternative engagements during the hiatus. The need for local events that promote teamwork and community spirit continues to be a priority.
While the Gus Macker tournament is taking a hiatus, its legacy remains within the community, and discussions will continue regarding its return in the coming years. The decision underscores the importance of adaptability and sustainability in event planning, especially in a vibrant community like Jamestown.
