Community Unites in Candlelight Vigil for Peace on Central Avenue

On Tuesday evening, a profound sense of solidarity enveloped Central Avenue as community members gathered for a candlelight vigil titled “United in Peace” at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. This prayer service, led by Rev. Robert Owczarczak, pastor of the Lord’s Vineyard which includes Holy Trinity, was ignited by community concerns over escalating violence.

Addressing the Cycle of Violence and Pain

Rev. Owczarczak shared that the service emerged from conversations with individuals troubled by recent violent incidents that have made headlines. “We must pray for those who may harbor thoughts of causing harm,” he expressed, urging attendees to seek inner light through divine guidance. He highlighted the importance of recognizing brokenness in society, asserting, “Hurt people hurt people,” acknowledging the deep-rooted issues such as alcoholism, infidelity, and addiction that affect many lives.

Embracing Peace Beyond Absence of Violence

The service was ecumenical in nature, with Pastor Matthew Schettler of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fredonia contributing to the reflection. He read a passage from the Book of Philippians, emphasizing that true peace transcends the mere absence of conflict. “Consider peace as the presence of God, which surpasses all understanding,” he remarked, encouraging a perspective shift towards spiritual serenity amidst turmoil.

Candlelight Vigil: A Symbol of Hope

As the gathering progressed, participants joined in singing “Let There Be Peace On Earth,” lighting their candles as a visual representation of hope. Under the watchful eye of a police officer, candle bearers made their way to Central Avenue, highlighting the persistent reminder of societal challenges echoed by distant sirens.

Encouraging Outreach and Connection

Rev. Owczarczak concluded the evening by emphasizing the necessity of personal outreach. “While holding a candle symbolizes awareness, reaching out to someone in need is where real healing begins,” he stated. The vigil fostered a shared moment of contemplation, with attendees standing in silence for approximately ten minutes, enveloped in the glow of their candles.

Future Community Action on Local Issues

In addition to dealing with the themes of violence and healing, the community remains proactive on practical matters. Recently, Fredonia has engaged H&K Services to modernize the chlorination system at the village water treatment facility, showcasing a commitment to enhancing local infrastructure while fostering community well-being.

As the evening drew to a close, the spirit of unity on Central Avenue served as a poignant reminder of the importance of community and the collective journey towards healing and peace.
