Michigan Panthers and Memphis Showboats Exit UFL: A Strategic Shift

UFL’s Strategic Shift to Smaller Venues

The United Football League (UFL) is making significant changes as it prepares for its third season in 2026. The league announced the exit of the Michigan Panthers, Memphis Showboats, and San Antonio Brahmas, aligning with earlier reports from July. In contrast, the Birmingham Stallions will remain part of the UFL, as clarified by a Sports Business Journal report.

Adapting to New Venue Visions

The decision to pull out of these three markets is rooted in the UFL’s vision of focusing on smaller, more intimate stadiums that enhance the fan experience. According to a statement made to Ben Fischer of Sports Business Journal, current venues do not align with this new strategy. Consequently, this shift aims to provide a more engaging and personal atmosphere for spectators.

Expansion Plans: Eyeing Columbus and More

The UFL is moving forward with its expansion plans by introducing a team in Columbus. Matches will take place at the Columbus Crew’s Major League Soccer stadium. Other cities under consideration for future teams include Louisville, Orlando, and Boise, marking an exciting phase for the league’s growth.

Future Aspirations: 16 Teams by 2035

Mike Repole, a new investor in the UFL, outlined ambitious goals for the league, targeting an expansion to 16 teams by 2035. For now, the primary aim is to leverage smaller venues to counter perceptions of low attendance during games.

Current Status: Attendance and Viewership

The UFL witnessed a decline in attendance and television viewership from 2024 to 2025; however, overall numbers remain promising. The organization is keen on leveraging its current strengths to foster long-term growth and success in the competitive sports landscape.
