Tommy Williams Appointed Interim President of Texas A&M University

Texas A&M University System’s Board of Regents has unanimously elected Tommy Williams, a former state senator from The Woodlands, as interim president of Texas A&M University. With a rich background in public service and higher education, Williams brings a wealth of experience to this leadership role. Previously, he served as the vice chancellor of governmental relations for the Texas A&M System, advocating for the institution’s priorities at both state and federal levels.

Williams’ Extensive Public Service and Higher Education Experience

Williams’ extensive experience, including his tenure as a Texas senator from 2003 to 2013, where he chaired the Senate Finance Committee, positions him well to guide the university. His legislative work significantly influenced the state’s budget and education policy. Following his legislative career, he joined the Texas A&M System in 2014, contributing until his retirement in 2018, and also served as a senior advisor to Governor Greg Abbott from 2017 to 2019.

Commitment to the Values and Mission of Texas A&M

Chancellor Glenn Hegar lauded Williams, describing him as a “thoughtful leader” and a “faithful Aggie,” having graduated from Texas A&M in 1978 with a degree in business administration. “Tommy Williams has a deep understanding of the mission of Texas A&M and the values that define our university,” Hegar said. “His commitment to the Aggie community will be instrumental as we navigate this transition period.”

Board of Regents’ Confidence in Williams’ Leadership

Robert L. Albritton, chairman of the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, expressed strong confidence in Williams’ leadership. “Tommy Williams brings integrity, experience and a deep respect for the traditions of Texas A&M. His understanding of the institution’s needs and his statewide connections make him the right fit for this crucial role as interim president,” Albritton stated.
