Nick Smith Jr. Quickly Spots Key Differences Between Lakers and Hornets

Nick Smith Jr. Embarks on New Journey with Los Angeles Lakers

Just ahead of training camp, the Los Angeles Lakers secured their final two-way contract by signing Nick Smith Jr., a former first-round pick. Smith, who was recently waived by the Charlotte Hornets after two seasons, brings potential and a fresh perspective to the Lakers. In his 111 games with the Hornets, including 28 starts, he averaged 8.0 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists, maintaining a respectable 36.9% shooting rate from beyond the arc.

Adjusting to the Spotlight: Smith Embraces Lakers’ Environment

Smith quickly recognized the stark contrast in team atmosphere upon his arrival in Los Angeles. “It’s been crazy. When I attended Media Day, I was surprised by the hundreds of people present compared to the modest turnout in Charlotte,” Smith shared after his first practice with the Lakers. “It’s definitely a blessing to be here and learn from the best.”

Smith isn’t entirely new to the Lakers organization. Having worked out for them during the 2023 pre-draft process, he reflects on the gratitude he feels wearing the iconic purple and gold. “I was just trying to get my foot in the door during the pre-draft workout,” he recalls. “Ending up here now is kind of surreal. I’m just thankful for the opportunity to learn and grow.”

Focus on Improvement: Smith’s Goals with the Lakers

Though excited to contribute, Smith understands the need for further development. “I want to focus on keeping the game simple and enhancing my shooting skills to help put the ball in the basket effectively,” he said. “Improving as a defender is also crucial.”

Reflecting on the Hornets Departure

For any first-round pick, the expectation is to settle into a team rather than seek a new home so soon. Reflecting on his unexpected transition, Smith opens up about his time with the Hornets. “Sometimes things don’t work out,” he admits. “I’m here to ask questions and catch up with the team’s progress since summer, staying ready and adapting quickly.”
