Reviving ‘Reading Rainbow’: A New Era Begins with Mychal Threets

Mychal Threets Takes the Helm of ‘Reading Rainbow’

The beloved children’s program, ‘Reading Rainbow,’ is making a grand return nearly two decades after its initial conclusion. The cherished show is set to captivate a new generation with Mychal Threets as the host, succeeding the legendary LeVar Burton. Threets, an avid library advocate and social media sensation from Solano County, California, is thrilled to lead the program into a new digital era.

From Childhood Favorite to Digital Revival

Originally running for 26 years on PBS and earning over 250 awards, including 26 Emmys and a Peabody Award, ‘Reading Rainbow’ fostered a love for reading among countless children. Threets, who holds a deep admiration for Burton and the original series, expressed his enthusiasm on Instagram, crediting both Burton and ‘Reading Rainbow’ for his passion for reading and libraries.

Digital Adaptation on Kidzuko YouTube Channel

In response to the evolving media consumption habits of today’s youth, the reinvigorated ‘Reading Rainbow’ will be available on YouTube. Buffalo Toronto Public Media, in collaboration with Embassy Row, co-produced the new season. The first of four episodes is set to premiere this Saturday on the Kidzuko channel, under the umbrella of Sony Pictures.

The Future of ‘Reading Rainbow’

While a second season of the reboot has not been officially announced, representatives from Buffalo Toronto Public Media, which played a key role in creating the original series in 1983, remain optimistic about the show’s continued success. Previously, Burton attempted to revive the series, but faced legal hurdles with the local PBS station tied to Buffalo Toronto Public Media.

Emegypt is excited to see how this new iteration can continue the legacy of inspiring children to find joy in reading.
