Rudy Giuliani’s Allies Support Andrew Cuomo Over Curtis Sliwa for NYC Mayor Calling Sliwa a Socialist and Fruit Loop

At a Crossroads: Giuliani Allies Support Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
Top Giuliani Aides Break Ranks in NYC Mayoral Battle
In a surprising political shift, prominent associates of former Republican Mayor Rudy Giuliani are throwing their support behind Andrew Cuomo over the GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa in the upcoming New York City mayoral race. This move marks a significant departure from traditional party lines in a heated electoral contest.
Key Figures Backing Cuomo Over Party Lines
Joe Lhota, a former Republican mayoral candidate in 2013 and once a deputy mayor under Giuliani, has publicly endorsed Cuomo. Lhota, who served as the MTA chief under then-Governor Cuomo, cited practical governance as his reason for support. Switching his political affiliation from Republican to Democrat, Lhota stated, “It’s a choice between a proven manager, a socialist, and a fruit loop. Of course, I’m going to be with Andrew.”
Anthony Carbonetti, Giuliani’s ex-chief of staff and senior advisor in his 2008 presidential campaign, echoed Lhota’s sentiments. Carbonetti emphasized the necessity for Cuomo to gain votes from both Sliwa supporters and undecided voters to challenge the Democratic nominee, Zohran Mamdani, who leads the race.
Concerns Over Democratic Socialist Front-Runner
Carbonetti and others express concern about Mamdani’s progressive agenda. The former Republican advisor warned against policies like fare-free buses, which he claims could lead to unintended consequences, such as turning buses into “mobile homeless shelters.”
Broadening the Political Discussion
The endorsement of Cuomo by Mike Mukasey, former GOP US Attorney General and staunch Republican voter, further adds complexity to the election dynamics. Mukasey argued that preventing Mamdani’s potential victory, which he described as a risk to the city’s financial health, is paramount. He urged voters to consider Cuomo as the most viable alternative, especially after the withdrawal of Eric Adams from the race.
Republican Party Dilemma
President Trump’s recent comments on the Republican nominee, Curtis Sliwa, highlighted internal party challenges. Although a Republican himself, Trump candidly critiqued Sliwa’s chances against Mamdani, implying Cuomo might be a stronger opponent.
Expecting a Tight Race
Despite the high-profile endorsements, the Sliwa campaign remains unfazed. Campaign adviser Rob Cole dismissed the significance of Lhota’s and other Giuliani associates’ support for Cuomo, citing Lhota’s earlier affiliation switch.
As election day approaches, recent polls depict Zohran Mamdani as the front-runner, although he holds less than 50% of the expected vote. With Mayor Eric Adams stepping back, the election landscape could shift further. With political alliances blurred and public opinion still forming, New York City’s mayoral race remains unpredictable.
