Air Force vs Navy Game Continues Uninterrupted Amid Government Shutdown

Air Force-Navy Game Remains Unaffected Amid Government Shutdown
The Air Force-Navy football game is set to proceed as scheduled in Annapolis, Maryland, this Saturday, despite the ongoing government shutdown and its effects on service academies’ athletic departments.
Navy’s Limited Impact from Government Shutdown
The Naval Academy Athletic Association, a nonprofit entity operating independently since 1891, plays a crucial role in mitigating the impact of government actions on Navy’s athletic teams. According to Scott Strasemeier, Navy’s Senior Associate Athletic Director, civilian coaches who receive government pay are affected; however, none of these coaches are part of the football program. Coaches who are compensated through the association remain unaffected.
Strasemeier noted in an email that a few Olympic sports teams are experiencing disruptions due to coaches who also teach physical education, placing them under government pay. Yet, he emphasized that all teams continue to have active coaching staff and are engaging in regular practices and competitions.
Government Shutdown’s Effects on Air Force Athletics
The Air Force is also experiencing challenges. Correspondence sent to Troy Garnhart, Associate Athletic Director for Communications, triggers an automated response indicating his indefinite absence due to the shutdown. Garnhart plays a key role in media relations for the football program and is a civilian employee affected by the government pause.
Air Force Academy Athletic Corporation to Support Events
Despite these challenges, the Air Force Academy remains committed to continuing its scheduled athletic events. The academy announced that there will be no cancellations of home or away intercollegiate athletic events this time. The Air Force Academy Athletic Corporation (AFAAC) will provide essential funding, travel, and logistical support to ensure all events proceed without interruption.
During the 2018 government shutdown, the Air Force had to cancel several sporting events. However, the current situation differs with proactive measures in place to maintain the athletic schedule. The academy has acknowledged that while updates on events will be reduced and delayed, the athletic calendar remains intact.
