UCLA Shakes Up Coaching Staff Amidst Challenging Football Season

UCLA and Offensive Challenges: A Closer Look

In a significant development, UCLA and offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri have mutually parted ways, according to the team’s announcement on Tuesday. Sunseri, who joined UCLA this season from Indiana, was at the helm of an offense struggling to produce, averaging a meager 14.3 points per game.

The offensive play-calling responsibilities will be assumed by Jerry Neuheisel, the current tight ends coach and former Bruins quarterback. Neuheisel is notably the son of former UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel, bringing a legacy of experience to the role. UCLA is gearing up to host No. 7 Penn State on Saturday, adding further pressure on the newly restructured coaching team.

Turbulent Times: Changes in UCLA’s Coaching Staff

Sunseri’s departure marks the second major coaching shift following the removal of head coach DeShaun Foster after a disappointing 0-3 start. The team previously saw defensive coordinator Ikaika Malloe exit, following Foster’s dismissal. Interim head coach Tim Skipper appointed Kevin Coyle to manage defensive strategies for the remainder of the season.

Background on Tino Sunseri’s Role and Transition

Tino Sunseri, son of long-time college and NFL coach Sal Sunseri, was experiencing his first year as a primary offensive coordinator. Last season, he shared duties at Indiana with Mike Shanahan. Following Indiana’s remarkable 2024 College Football Playoff run, Sunseri was the only on-field assistant to leave the team’s staff.

During spring practice, Sunseri worked extensively with transfer quarterback Joey Aguilar before shifting focus as UCLA acquired Tennessee’s Nico Iamaleava. Iamaleava, who has started the first four games, has recorded 788 passing yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions, while also leading the team with 204 rushing yards.

Jerry Neuheisel’s Expanded Role at UCLA

Jerry Neuheisel has been part of the UCLA coaching staff since 2018. Under Chip Kelly, he coached wide receivers from 2021 to 2023, before transitioning to coach the tight ends this season. His expanded role now includes orchestrating the offensive strategy, a crucial task as he aims to revitalize the team’s performance in upcoming matches.
