PSU unveils exciting plans for new dorm building dedicated to first-year students

Portland State University Unveils New Residence Hall Plans to Enhance Student Housing
Portland State University Announces State-of-the-Art Dormitory Project
Portland State University (PSU) is gearing up to enhance student living with its latest proposal for a six-story, 124,000-square-foot residence hall at 1831 S.W. Park Ave. This ambitious project aims to provide a vibrant living environment exclusively for first-year students, offering modern amenities that reflect the evolving needs of university housing.
Comprehensive Facilities to Foster Student Engagement
The new development, designed by GBD Architects with Fortis Construction as the designated contractor, will feature approximately 550 beds. The dormitory will primarily consist of double-occupancy units, with some single and triple-occupancy options available. Students can expect a range of amenities tailored to support both academic and social pursuits:
- Private restrooms in each unit
- Multiple community lounges per floor
- Study nooks and classrooms
- Community and allergen-free kitchens
- Music practice rooms
- Office spaces
- A large porch area overlooking the South Park Blocks
Strategic Location and Future Plans
The selected site for the residence hall is touted as one of PSU’s premium campus locations. According to Ashley Wendler, PSU’s executive director of University Housing and Residence Life, the introduction of this facility will free up existing residences, like the Broadway and Ondine halls, making them available for transfer, graduate, and continuing students.
Modern Living Solutions and Enrollment Stability
PSU’s new dormitory aims to provide competitive and modern living spaces, aligning with facilities offered by other institutions. With stable enrollment projected over the next few years, PSU is focusing on replacing aging infrastructure with new, accessible, and seismically sound buildings. Christina Williams, PSU spokeswoman, highlighted, “Our enrollment is steady. We’re replacing older buildings to meet modern standards.”
Addressing Affordability and Accessibility in Student Housing
The new residence hall promises affordability, adhering to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s guidelines. “Portland’s an expensive city to live in,” Williams noted. “Any affordable housing we offer improves student outcomes.”
PSU is committed to offering low-barrier housing, eliminating the need for large security deposits, and offering a modest $50 application fee, without requiring proof of income. Construction is slated to begin in late 2026, with the new facility ready to welcome students by fall 2028.
