Polio Cases Resurface in Sindh, Pakistan: A Setback in Eradication Efforts

Spike in Polio Cases Endangers Eradication Progress in Sindh

In a recent development, health officials in Pakistan have reported two new polio cases in the southern province of Sindh, marking a setback in the ongoing battle to eliminate the disease among children. These cases, identified in the cities of Badin and Thatta, bring the country’s total to 29 since the beginning of the year, despite multiple immunization efforts spearheaded by the Pakistan Polio Eradication Program.

Challenges in Pakistan and Afghanistan’s Polio Eradication

Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan remain the only two countries where wild poliovirus transmission persists, according to the World Health Organization. Several challenges hinder eradication efforts, including vaccine refusals and accessibility issues in remote areas. Furthermore, health workers often face life-threatening risks, particularly in former militant strongholds. In February, a police officer was fatally shot in Jamrud, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while protecting a vaccination team. Attacks on polio workers and their police escorts have resulted in over 200 deaths since the 1990s.

Ongoing Vaccination Campaigns to Combat Polio

Despite these challenges, a recent campaign successfully vaccinated nearly 21 million children under five across Pakistan. A new nationwide door-to-door initiative, starting October 13, aims to immunize 45 million children in an ongoing effort to curb polio transmission.

Understanding Polio: The Threat and the Global Fight

Polio is a highly infectious and incurable disease, often leading to irreversible paralysis. Since January, Pakistan has recorded an average of three new cases per month. The global fight against polio began in 1988 under the World Health Organization’s initiative, inspired by the successful eradication of smallpox in 1980. While there were instances of significant progress, such as in 2021 when only five cases were reported in Pakistan and Afghanistan, the number surged to 99 last year, causing concerns over missed eradication targets.
