Latter-day Saint Leader Announces Apostles to Guide Church Until First Presidency Reorganization

Optimism and Reflection Mark Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Conference in Salt Lake City

The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles Leads Historic Conference

In Salt Lake City, the 195th Semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints commenced under the leadership of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. This leadership shift comes as the First Presidency awaits reorganization following the passing of President Russell M. Nelson at the age of 101. Elder Henry B. Eyring, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, explained that this process is known as an apostolic interregnum, which has occurred at various points in the church’s history.

Senior Church Leaders Address Faithful Attendees

President Dallin H. Oaks, anticipated to succeed President Nelson, delivered opening remarks Saturday morning. He emphasized the continuation of the conference as planned by President Nelson, highlighting its importance for providing guidance to the faith’s members. President Oaks fondly remembered his long association with President Nelson, stating, “He is our model as a servant and follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.” The two-day conference proceeds with a schedule pre-approved by President Nelson.

Remembering President Russell M. Nelson

President Nelson’s funeral is scheduled for Tuesday at noon at the Conference Center, with a public viewing set for the prior day. His leadership and service to the church since 1984 have left a profound legacy, as noted by President Oaks and fellow church leaders. The conference serves as a tribute to his impactful life and service.

Addressing Tragedy and Promoting Peace

During the opening session, Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles addressed the recent tragedy at a Latter-day Saint meetinghouse in Michigan, where a gunman attacked and set the building on fire. The incident resulted in four deaths and multiple injuries. Elder Stevenson acknowledged the global uncertainties and tragedies that weigh on the church community, emphasizing the need for peacemakers in these challenging times.

Quoting teachings often echoed by President Nelson, Elder Stevenson urged, “Before posting, replying, or commenting online, ask, will this build a bridge? If not, stop. Do not send. Instead, share goodness. Publish peace in the place of hate.”
