John Harbaugh Urges Struggling Ravens to Unite and Persevere

Ravens Coach Supports Defensive Coordinator After Heavy Loss to Texans

BALTIMORE – Following the Baltimore Ravens’ disappointing 44-10 defeat to the Houston Texans, Head Coach John Harbaugh stood firm in his support for defensive coordinator Zach Orr. This loss marked yet another chapter in a struggling season for the Ravens, raising questions about the team’s defensive performance. “I do not think that that’s the answer,” Harbaugh stated, addressing the possibility of changes within the coaching staff. He emphasized the need for unity and hard work: “We need to stick together and find ourselves, with both coaches and players collaborating.”

Ravens’ Historic Defensive Struggles This Season

This shocking outcome has left the Ravens with a disheartening 1-4 record for only the second time in the franchise’s 30-year history. The game witnessed the Ravens surrendering a staggering 44 points, the highest total allowed in a home game during Harbaugh’s 18-season tenure. The defense struggled to contain Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud, who led his team to five touchdowns despite the Texans having scored only six times for the entire season prior to this matchup.

Examining the Ravens’ Defensive Challenges

The struggles with the Ravens’ defense have become a recurring theme throughout the season. Orr, now in his second year as the team’s playcaller, took over the reins in 2024 from Mike Macdonald. So far this season, the Ravens have allowed a total of 177 points, setting a franchise record for the most points surrendered in the first five games of a season.

Outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy addressed the ongoing issues, stating, “We have to get our act together. Coaches can provide plays, but it’s on us to execute. Regardless of our role, we need to do our jobs.”

Injuries Compound Baltimore’s Troubles

With the season’s challenges already mounting, injuries have further complicated matters. The Ravens entered the game against the Texans without seven Pro Bowl players from the previous season, including two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson. Historically, Baltimore’s record drops significantly when Jackson is absent, falling to 4-10 in those situations. This defeat marked the fifth consecutive loss suffered by the Ravens when Jackson is sidelined due to a hamstring injury.

Other key players missing included:

  • Kyle Hamilton (safety, groin injury)
  • Ronnie Stanley (offensive tackle, ankle injury)
  • Marlon Humphrey (cornerback, calf injury)
  • Roquan Smith (middle linebacker, hamstring injury)
  • Patrick Ricard (fullback, calf injury)
  • Nnamdi Madubuike (defensive tackle, out for season, neck injury)

To compensate for the absences, Baltimore had to field five rookies on defense, a challenge that Harbaugh believed the team could manage better. “I thought we would play better and tackle up to our standards,” he said. “We had good enough players to perform significantly better.”

Future is Uncertain for Ravens

This latest loss marks the second-largest home defeat for the Ravens since 2013, leaving the team in a precarious position regarding their playoff aspirations. Historically, only 16 out of 382 teams in the Super Bowl era, or 4.1%, that lost four or more of their first five games have qualified for the playoffs.

Running back Derrick Henry remains optimistic, stating, “I definitely believe in these guys. It’s easy to be negative, but I’m focusing on personal accountability first and foremost.” However, questions remain regarding the team’s sense of accountability. Van Noy, when asked about accountability in the wake of recent losses, acknowledged the uncertainty and promised to provide more clarity in the coming week.

As the Ravens prepare for their next game against the Los Angeles Rams, the team will seek to turn their season around and reclaim their momentum.
