Breaking News from Oahu: Lifeguards and EMS Tackle Weekend Rescues Amid High Surf Advisory

High Surf Advisory Leads to Numerous Incidents

The City and County of Honolulu’s Ocean Safety Department (OSD) and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were kept busy over the weekend, responding to numerous near-drowning incidents, rescues, and medical emergencies across Oahu. A high surf advisory was active on Sunday for the north and west shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, and Molokai, as well as the north shores of Maui, posing significant challenges for beach visitors and safety personnel.

Off-Duty Heroics at Kaneohe Sandbar

On Saturday, an off-duty lifeguard at Kaneohe Sandbar played a critical role in rescuing an unresponsive swimmer. The lifeguard initiated CPR until on-duty lifeguards arrived. The swimmer was subsequently transferred to the Honolulu Fire Department and then transported by EMS to the hospital in critical condition.

Rescue Efforts at Popular Oahu Beaches

Lifeguards were also instrumental at Keawaula, where they assisted a hiker from Kaena Point, who was later hospitalized. Meanwhile, at Ke Iki Beach, two individuals swept into the surf were rescued by lifeguards, the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD), and a bystander, before being taken to the hospital by EMS in critical condition.

A separate incident at Hanauma Bay involved the rescue of a 74-year-old snorkeler who had swallowed water. EMS transferred him to the hospital, where he remained in serious condition.

Additional Emergencies Highlight Challenges

At Pokai Bay, lifeguards responded to a powerless vessel by using jet skis to bring those aboard safely to shore. One person with a thumb injury required attention from EMS. Meanwhile, a situation at Sharks Cove saw three individuals suffering serious abrasions and lacerations. EMS, alongside OSD, treated a 27-year-old man and a 24-year-old man, transporting them to the hospital in serious condition. A 21-year-old man declined transport despite injuries.

Preventative Measures and Lifeguard Guidance

Lifeguards on Oahu’s North Shore performed over 2,700 preventative actions and executed 25 rescues on Sunday alone, highlighting the proactive approach being taken to ensure public safety. Officials urge beachgoers to consult with lifeguards before entering the water, heed all warning signs, and call 911 for lifeguard assistance in emergencies.
