Top Stanley Cup Contenders: Golden Knights, Oilers, and Lightning Lead the Charge This Season

We are just a day away from the highly anticipated NHL regular season, and with that comes the return of the Daily Faceoff power rankings. Fans can expect a season filled with spirited debates and opinions, especially as the commentators brace themselves for lively discussions in the comments section. While the rankings’ second spot has seen numerous changes, Hunter Crowther is set to be my regular co-pilot for the 2025-26 season. This week, however, I’m joined by my former partner Mike Gould, who steps in for the preseason rankings. As we shift into the regular season, we will continue using our tier-based ranking system, categorizing teams into five main groups: Cup Contenders, Playoff Contenders, In the Bubble, Longshots, and Lottery Contenders. Teams where we disagreed will be subdivided into four additional tiers: Cup Hopefuls, Playoff Hopefuls, Fringe Playoff Teams, and Too Bad to be Good, Too Good to be Bad. Next week, we’ll revert to our traditional ranking of teams from 1 to 32.
Top Cup Contenders Heading into the NHL Season
As the excitement builds for the new NHL season, here’s a look at the key teams poised to make a deep playoff run.
Edmonton Oilers: Aiming for the Cup
The Edmonton Oilers remain a strong Cup contender, anchored by superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Despite some questions surrounding their goaltending, the potential rise of players like Ike Howard and Matt Savoie could provide much-needed youthful energy to the roster. Their defense will heavily rely on the performance of Mattias Ekholm, who must return to form after enduring a challenging playoff season.
Tampa Bay Lightning: Depth and Experience
The Tampa Bay Lightning are among the top teams this season, showcasing a solid talent pool led by its championship core, including Brayden Point and Victor Hedman. With the hiring of a new coach, the team has reinvigorated its depth, adding valuable players like Oliver Bjorkstrand. Their familiarity and blend of skill could make them a formidable opponent in the league.
Vegas Golden Knights: Strengthened by Key Additions
The Golden Knights are in prime position to compete for the Stanley Cup this season, especially with the acquisition of Mitch Marner. Alongside their existing core players, this addition enhances their chances of success. With strong defensive strategies and an offensive boost, they could emerge as serious championship contenders.
Carolina Hurricanes: Ready to Compete
The Hurricanes have made headway this offseason by adding Nikolaj Ehlers, complementing an already strong defense. Their youth-driven approach, particularly with rising players like Seth Jarvis, positions them for potential success. Their ability to adapt and strategize effectively will determine their Cup aspirations this season.
Colorado Avalanche: Breaking Back Into Contention
While the Colorado Avalanche have maintained a spot in the top tier, there are concerns regarding their overall effectiveness compared to previous seasons. The return of Gabriel Landeskog provides a boost, but the absence of key players could impact their chances significantly. They need to find ways to overcome any challenges presented by roster changes.
Florida Panthers: Cup Hopefuls with High Stakes
Having retained most of their roster, the Florida Panthers are facing high expectations. The potential absence of Aleksander Barkov for the season raises questions about their Cup prospects. However, if he can return in time for the playoffs, they could once again be top contenders.
Playoff Contenders Emerge
As teams gear up for competition, several others boast strong potential to secure playoff spots.
Dallas Stars: Seeking Defensive Stability
The Stars need to shore up their defense if they hope to advance beyond the playoff round. Despite their shortcomings, they remain a strong team prepared to capitalize on opportunities if improvements are made.
Ottawa Senators: Aiming for Consistency
The Senators appear ready to solidify their playoff positioning after a successful prior season. Their mix of young talent and veteran players like Linus Ullmark could propel them further into the postseason discussions.
Washington Capitals: Facing Uncertain Times
The Capitals may need to brace for a challenging season as regression is expected after a series of record-breaking performances. While their playoff hopes still linger, a dip in overall performance may hinder their aspirations.
Teams on the Bubble as the Season Begins
Several teams find themselves on the playoff fringe, showing potential but facing significant hurdles.
Buffalo Sabres: Emerging from the Shadows
The Sabres are witnessing improvements that make them potential contenders. A solid core of young talent combined with experienced defensemen places them in the playoff conversation, but questions remain about their goaltending prowess.
Los Angeles Kings: Need for Growth
With a changing roster, the Kings are at a critical juncture. Their recent offseason acquisitions need to blend with their existing core to maintain competitive gameplay in the increasingly tough Western Conference.
New York Islanders: Uneasy Expectations
The Islanders are banking on recent draft picks and free-agent signings to spark a turnaround, yet their overall prospects remain uncertain. A lack of compelling performance could prove challenging against stronger teams.
Analyzing Longshots and Lottery Contenders
As we look ahead, some teams may need to recalibrate their expectations, falling into the longshots and lottery contender categories.
Calgary Flames: Rebuilding Phase
The Flames face a daunting task this season. Despite having promising young players, the roster lacks balance and depth, making them unlikely to compete seriously in the playoffs.
Chicago Blackhawks: The Road Ahead
Struggling in past seasons, the Blackhawks are rebuilding, with hopes for standout performances from young players. However, more consistent contributions will be vital as they aim to ascend from the lottery contender category.
Pittsburgh Penguins: Navigating a Complex Future
The Penguins are caught between rebuilding and contending. Despite holding a talented roster, the balance of age and competitiveness is precarious, casting doubts on their ability to reclaim playoff glory.
