Jordi Alba Announces Retirement from Soccer with Inter Miami at Season’s End

Jordi Alba Bids Farewell to an Illustrious Career

Jordi Alba, renowned as one of the finest left-backs of recent times and a significant on-field partner of Lionel Messi, has announced his retirement from professional soccer. Upon the conclusion of the current Major League Soccer (MLS) season with Inter Miami, the 36-year-old defender will close the chapter on a glittering 16-year career. Alba’s tenure includes an array of titles with FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team, notably the 2012 UEFA European Championship and the 2015 UEFA Champions League.

“I retire with complete conviction, fulfillment, and happiness, having journeyed this path with all possible passion. Now is the perfect moment to embrace a new phase and conclude the previous one with the best feelings,” Alba expressed in an emotional video shared on Instagram. Despite extending his contract until 2027 in May, Alba’s decision stems from personal and family considerations, according to a source close to him through AFP.

Legacy of a Dynamic Left-Back

Standing at 1.70 meters, Alba was known for his explosive physical presence and offensive prowess. His symbiotic relationship with Messi, both at Inter Miami and previously at Barcelona—where Alba played from 2012 to 2023—made him a standout player. “Today, I close this chapter knowing I’ve given it my all. Soccer has been, is, and always will be an essential part of my life. Thank you, soccer, for everything,” Alba noted in his farewell video.

Impact on Inter Miami and Teammates

Alba’s announcement is another unexpected turn for Inter Miami—affectionately known as Las Garzas—following Sergio Busquets, another Spanish and extraordinary defensive midfielder, who declared his retirement plans at the MLS season’s end. Busquets was the first of the ‘Fantastic Four’ at Inter, which also comprises Messi and Uruguayan Luis Suárez, to announce a departure. These players, ranging from 36 to 38 in age, are nearing the end of their legendary careers in Miami, inspired by Messi’s journey.

Uncertainty and Aspirations Ahead

The soccer world is highly anticipating Messi’s renewal announcement, potentially extending his contract beyond 2026. Suárez, concluding his contract in December, expressed an interest in extending his stay in Miami. Together, the former Barcelona stars aim to secure Inter Miami’s first MLS title this season, with the final scheduled for December 6. Miami has two regular-season matches left before the playoffs commence on October 24.
