Growing Tensions at David Ellison’s Paramount Over Israel Stance

Paramount+ Launches ‘Red Alert’ Series Amid Israel-Palestine Controversy
In a gathering that marked a significant moment in entertainment media, approximately 200 attendees joined Paramount on the Melrose Avenue lot for the premiere of “Red Alert.” This four-part drama portrays the harrowing Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel from the perspectives of six victims. Hosted by Paramount Chair and CEO David Ellison, the event took place on September 30, ahead of the series’ debut on Paramount+ on the attack’s second anniversary. The premiere added another dimension to the ongoing Israel-Hamas discourse in Hollywood.
Paramount’s Strategic Direction Under David Ellison
David Ellison, who recently took over Paramount following an $8-billion acquisition by his family and RedBird Capital Partners, has signified a rightward shift in the company’s ideological stance. Ellison has not shied away from engaging with contentious issues, notably in his support for Israeli-backed series “Red Alert.” The project highlights his willingness to challenge Hollywood norms and divisive issues.
Hollywood’s Divide on Israel-Palestine Relations
The launch of “Red Alert” comes at a time when Hollywood is polarized over the Israel-Hamas conflict. Recently, more than 5,000 industry professionals signed the Film Workers for Palestine letter, advocating for a boycott of Israeli film festivals and institutions. Paramount was one of the few major studios to publicly oppose this call, emphasizing the company’s belief in using storytelling to foster understanding and challenge divisive narratives.
Responses From Industry Stakeholders
While Paramount expressed its disagreement with the boycott through a statement emphasizing the role of storytelling, critics argue that the pledge simply aims to hold complicit institutions accountable under international law. Notably, the Creative Community for Peace responded with a counter-letter, accusing proponents of the boycott of enforcing “arbitrary censorship.”
Paramount’s New Ventures and Internal Reactions
In addition to “Red Alert,” Paramount has made bold moves, including acquiring the Free Press news site and appointing Bari Weiss as the new editor in chief at CBS News. These decisions have reportedly caused unrest within Paramount, as employees question the company’s direction and its perceived imbalances in narrative representation.
Upcoming Challenges for Paramount
As Paramount navigates these complex geopolitical and internal landscapes, the company is also anticipating significant layoffs aimed at reducing operational costs by over $2 billion. These changes follow promises made to investors by Skydance Media and RedBird Capital.
An internal group known as Paramount Employees of Conscience has voiced concerns about the company’s content strategy, pointing out a lack of programming reflecting Palestinian perspectives. While they have reached out to leadership, a formal reply has yet to be received.
The controversy surrounding “Red Alert” and responses from within the industry underscore the broader cultural and political challenges that media companies face in today’s divided global landscape.
