Cheyann Peeteetuce Claims Memory Lapse in Megan Gallagher Manslaughter Case

Saskatoon Trial: Key Testimony Clouded by Amnesia Claims

Cheyann Peeteetuce, who previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of Megan Gallagher, appeared before a Saskatoon jury but claimed she could not recall the events of the day Gallagher was killed. Her testimony comes as part of the ongoing trial for Roderick Sutherland at Saskatoon Court of King’s Bench. Sutherland faces charges of manslaughter, unlawful confinement, and offering an indignity to human remains related to the 2020 incident.

Peeteetuce’s Inconsistent Recollections

Despite a guilty plea entered 10 months prior, Peeteetuce expressed uncertainty about her earlier admissions. When called to testify, she was shown a 2022 police interview conducted by Saskatoon’s Staff Sgt. Anthony Boensch. During the recorded session, Peeteetuce had detailed how Gallagher was tied up and beaten in a Weldon Avenue garage by three men, including Sutherland.

Yet, when questioned by both Crown prosecutor Bill Burge and defense lawyer Blaine Beaven, Peeteetuce repeatedly stated she could not remember discussing the assault, nor provided any clarity on what drove her to plead guilty previously.

Details of the Incident in Question

In her testimony, Peeteetuce mentioned only meeting Gallagher once, claiming they were mere “Facebook friends.” On that day in 2020, said Peeteetuce, she was in the garage with Gallagher where “a lot of people” were drinking and getting high. She admitted to not paying much attention to the events unfolding around her.

Burgeon further pressed Peeteetuce on what specific action led her to plead guilty. Her response remained consistent with her ongoing claim of memory lapse, simply stating, “I don’t remember.”

Identifying the Accused: Delayed Recognition

Efforts to identify Roderick Sutherland in the courtroom were initially inconclusive. Despite sitting nearby, Peeteetuce claimed she could not recognize him, even though Sutherland is distinguishable by a notable Ace of Spades tattoo on his neck. After his position was adjusted to be directly in her line of sight, Peeteetuce still professed an inability to recognize him.

Continuing Legal Proceedings

The trial, overseen by Justice John Morrall, will continue throughout the week as the jury weighs the testimony provided against the charges faced by Sutherland. The community remains attentive to further developments in this high-profile case.
