Stunning Glass Pumpkins Captivate Visitors at Santa Monica Farmers Market

Unveiling Artistic Glass Pumpkins in Santa Monica

With the onset of autumn, enchanting glass pumpkins are capturing attention across the country. Crafted with precision by alumni, students, and staff from Santa Monica College (SMC), these hand-blown masterpieces were prominently displayed at the Santa Monica Farmers Market on October 4. The event took place at Virginia Park, providing a splendid platform for these creative endeavors.

Vibrant Glass Art Display at Pico Branch Library

Visitors to the market were greeted by a vibrant collection of multicolored glass pumpkins near the entrance to the Pico Branch Library. Shoppers, both young and old, admired these stunning pieces. Children were particularly taken by the delicate glass creations, prompting parents to supervise closely as the little ones reached out to touch the exquisite artworks.

Curated by a Renowned Glass Sculptor

Terri Bromberg, a respected glass sculpture instructor at SMC, organized the annual glass pumpkin sale. In addition to the blown glass pumpkins, the event featured fused pumpkins, fruit, jewelry, and an array of glassware. Alumni staff highlighted the origins of these pumpkins, mentioning locales such as New England and Palo Alto.

A Thriving Glassblowing Tradition at SMC

Glass pumpkins have become an integral project within many glassblowing programs. Teaching assistant Susan Haskell remarked on locations with entire fields dedicated to glass pumpkins. The tradition began in Palo Alto, California, in 1996, with Boddy Bowes and Mike Binnard, founders of the Bay Area Glass Institute, initiating the first glass pumpkin patch fundraiser. The technique was later introduced to the MIT Glass Lab, leading to the Great Glass Pumpkin Patch in 2019. For over a decade, SMC has proudly carried on this tradition, bolstering the college’s glass program and aiding local artists.

Insights from the SMC Glass Art Community

Alumna Mildred Rivera showcased her glass-fused jewelry at the event, highlighting the substantial expenses involved in glassblowing. She explained that for those without access to a glassblowing facility, glass-fused art can be crafted using a high-power torch.
