All Whites Goalkeeper Finds New Home Away from Home in Football Return

Lechia Gdansk: Alex Paulsen’s Journey from A-League to Ekstraklasa
All Whites Goalkeeper Sets Sights on World Cup and Personal Growth
Alex Paulsen, the All Whites goalkeeper, has taken a leap in his professional journey by joining Lechia Gdansk in Poland’s Ekstraklasa. Leaving the A-League behind, Paulsen is embracing the challenges and opportunities for personal development that come with playing in a European league.
Bournemouth to Gdansk: A Career-Defining Move
The 23-year-old is part of English Premier League club AFC Bournemouth but after a brief return following a loan to Auckland FC, he made the move to Poland. “I always wanted to be in an environment where I’m number one,” Paulsen commented on his new position at Lechia Gdansk. The Polish club was struggling with defense when he joined, and Paulsen’s six matches so far have included three wins, three losses, and a draw.
Facing Relegation and Embracing Leadership
Playing in the Ekstraklasa introduces real threats of relegation, a sharp contrast to Paulsen’s previous A-League experiences. “The European competitions are leagues I want to be a part of,” he noted, emphasizing the value of competing at higher levels like the Champions League and Europa League. This season has allowed him to showcase his leadership skills, contributing to a young squad at Lechia Gdansk.
International Commitments and Challenges Ahead
Having missed previous All Whites matches to settle in Poland, Paulsen is rejoining his national team for games against European sides. Coach Darren Bazeley has listed him among three goalkeepers for upcoming matches against Poland and Norway, key fixtures as the All Whites gear up for the World Cup.
The Cultural Exchange and Culinary Adventures
While he may not be ready to guide his teammates around Poland, Paulsen is eager to introduce them to the local cuisine. He hopes they will try pierogi, a traditional Polish dish. This cultural immersion complements his goals both on and off the pitch in Poland.
