Nobel Peace Prize: Final Committee Meeting Held on Monday

The Norwegian Nobel Committee concluded its final meeting on Monday, as announced by the Nobel Institute on Thursday, just before the 2025 Peace Prize announcement.

Nobel Committee Finalizes Decision Ahead of Major Accord

This timeline indicates that the laureate was chosen well before the recent agreement between Israel and Hamas, which came under significant pressure from Donald Trump, who has been openly seeking the Nobel Peace Prize. Both Israel and the Islamist movement agreed on a ceasefire in Gaza on Thursday, coupled with the release of hostages, marking a significant step toward ending two years of destructive conflict in the Palestinian territory.

Inside the Nobel Committee’s Process

“The Nobel Committee’s last meeting took place on Monday,” said Erik Aasheim, spokesperson for the Norwegian Nobel Institute, to AFP. Comprised of five members, the Nobel Committee usually reaches a decision several days or even weeks before the official announcement. They hold a final meeting to refine their decisions just ahead of the announcement date. “The final touches were put in place on Monday, but we never disclose when the Nobel Committee makes its decision,” Aasheim added.

Nobel Prize Announcement Amidst Geopolitical Tensions

No new meetings are scheduled before revealing the laureate’s name on Friday at 11 AM (9 AM GMT), Aasheim specified. “There will be a laureate this year,” he confirmed, addressing speculation among experts that the Nobel Committee might refrain from awarding a prize due to ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Donald Trump’s Quest for the Nobel Peace Prize

Claiming a role in resolving multiple conflicts, Donald Trump has repeatedly asserted since returning to the presidency in January that he “deserves” the Nobel. Not awarding it to him would be an “insult” to the United States, he has stated recently. The agreement between Israel and Hamas “has absolutely no consequence” on the 2025 laureate’s selection, claimed Asle Sveen, a historian and expert on the Nobel Prize, to AFP.

Expert Predictions on the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

“Trump will not win the prize this year. I am 100% sure of that,” Sveen said, emphasizing that the American president had long “given a free hand” to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to bomb Gaza and provided substantial military aid to the Israeli army.

This year, 338 individuals and organizations were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2025, the prize was awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, a group of survivors from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, in their campaign against nuclear weapons.
