Emmitt Finnie Thrilled for New Opportunity with Red Wings

Detroit Red Wings Launch Centennial Celebration with Young Prospects
Red Wings vs. Canadiens: A Century in the Making
The Detroit Red Wings are set to embark on their centennial season, kicking off with a duel against the iconic Original Six rival, the Montreal Canadiens, on Thursday evening. As they celebrate a hundred years in the Motor City, the introduction of promising newcomers to the franchise adds another layer of excitement. Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, Axel Sandin-Pellikka, and Emmitt Finnie have earned roster spots for the opening game after impressive performances during Training Camp and pre-season.
Emmitt Finnie’s Debut in the NHL
Emmitt Finnie, drafted 201st overall in 2023, has earned a place on Detroit’s first line alongside team captain Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond. Reflecting on his inclusion in the lineup, Finnie expressed his excitement and anticipation. “I just came to the rink and found out I was going to be in the lineup. There’s lots of excitement and nerves for tonight, but I’m just happy it all worked out,” Finnie shared ahead of his NHL debut.
Learning from Seasoned Red Wings
Finnie, like other rookies, has benefited from the guidance of established players such as Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, and Moritz Seider. “I’ve talked to a couple of guys about their first games. They keep telling me to play my game, and the nerves will settle off the start. Just be super confident out there and play my game,” Finnie said.
Family and Fans: A Supportive Audience
Finnie will have extensive family support in the stands for his first game, including his parents, siblings, girlfriend, and more. “I’ve got my mom, dad, brother, sister, my girlfriend, aunt, uncle, and his wife. Lots of family and friends,” he noted.
Training Camp Highlights
Finnie impressed during Training Camp and the pre-season, participating in seven of eight games. He was utilized in various situations by head coach Todd McLellan, showcasing his speed and willingness to engage in the challenging areas of the ice. “I think I bring a high motor. I feel like a 200-foot player, and I have lots of speed, so I can be all over the ice and impact the game in many ways,” Finnie described his playing style.
Rediscovering Red Wings History
Coach Todd McLellan wants the young players to appreciate the rich history of Detroit’s team. Although Finnie was a toddler when the Red Wings last won the Stanley Cup in 2008, he has familiarized himself with the team’s legacy. “I’m pretty familiar with it, just from watching highlights. They were a dominant team and had dominant players. It’s definitely the expectation for this team, and they’ve built a legacy around it. We just want to get back to that point,” he said.
New Talent in the Spotlight
The Red Wings begin their 100th season by integrating top prospects Emmitt Finnie, Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, and Axel Sandin-Pellikka, marking the start of a new era in Detroit’s hockey saga. “It’s very special to be part of this, wearing the historic Winged Wheel. I’m super honored to be in this position,” Finnie said.
