IOC unveils extensive mental health support for athletes at Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics

As World Mental Health Day nears, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is underscoring its dedication to athlete well-being. This commitment ensures that each Olympic participant feels valued and supported throughout their journey.
A Comprehensive Framework for Athlete Support at Milano Cortina 2026
At the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, athletes and their associates will benefit from an enhanced range of services designed to promote mental wellness, prevent issues, and provide necessary care. These efforts are tailored to create a supportive environment conducive to athlete success.
Enhanced Cyber Abuse Protection System
A key initiative is the Cyber Abuse Protection System. This program will automatically cover all Olympic and Paralympic athletes, monitoring social media in real time to detect and remove harmful content proactively. Initially launched at Paris 2024, it stood as the largest online abuse prevention program in sports, and will be further improved using insights gained from those Games.
Athlete365 Mind Zone x Powerade
Every Olympic Village will feature an Athlete365 Mind Zone, offering athletes a serene space to recharge, practice mindfulness, and seek confidential support. This concept, successfully piloted at Paris 2024, received overwhelming praise from athletes. For Milano Cortina 2026, additional consultation pods will be added, providing a discreet venue for athletes and their associates to consult with IOC Safeguarding Officers.
Mentally Fit Helpline: A Constant Support
The Mentally Fit Helpline will continue to be available to athletes, offering 24/7 confidential support in over 70 languages. First introduced at Tokyo 2020, this helpline has consistently supported Olympians and their entourage during multiple Games editions. It provides a platform to address crises and everyday stressors, ensuring athletes can discuss challenges before, during, and post-competition.
Onsite Welfare Officers for Immediate Assistance
A dedicated network of Welfare Officers will be stationed within the Olympic Villages. First introduced at Beijing 2022, these officers offer safeguarding expertise and serve as trusted contacts for athletes and their entourages. Their presence is now a fundamental aspect of Games-time support.
Together, these initiatives are designed to cultivate a safe and nurturing atmosphere for athletes and their support teams at Milano Cortina 2026, honoring the IOC’s long-term commitment to mental health and athlete well-being.
