Renowned musician John Lodge, best known as the co-lead singer and bass guitarist of the legendary rock band The Moody Blues, has passed away at the age of 82. Lodge’s family shared the heart-wrenching news, stating he was “suddenly and unexpectedly taken from us.”
The Moody Blues: A Pillar of Rock History
The Moody Blues, a band formed in 1964, achieved phenomenal success worldwide, selling over 70 million records. They were rightfully inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. Lodge’s remarkable contributions were highlighted by his talent for songwriting, which produced hits like “Peak Hour,” “Ride My See-Saw,” and “Isn’t Life Strange,” earning him ASCAP songwriting awards.
Family’s Heartfelt Tribute
In a statement distributed by the PA agency, Lodge’s family expressed their profound grief: “It is with the deepest sadness that we announce that John Lodge, our darling husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, and brother, has been suddenly and unexpectedly taken from us.” They fondly remembered his love for his family and music, recalling that he passed peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones and the music of The Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly.
Honors and Achievements
John Lodge’s illustrious career included numerous accolades including the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music in 1985, and the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Annual Prog Awards in London, 2019.
Lodge’s connection with fellow Moody Blues members dates back to his teenage years when he met future bandmate, Ray Thomas, at the age of 14. Following the departure of the original bassist Clint Warwick, Lodge joined the iconic group.
A Lasting Legacy
His bandmates’ deaths, notably Ray Thomas in early 2018 and Mike Pinder in the previous year, left John as the last living member of the original lineup until his passing. He is survived by his devoted wife Kirsten and their children, Emily and Kristian. The family collaborated on John’s work “In These Crazy Times,” produced during the lockdown.
Lodge’s signature phrase at the end of concerts, “Thank you for keeping the faith,” continues to resonate with fans worldwide as they commemorate the immense impact he had on music and his enduring legacy.
