Iraqi Kurdistan Urges PKK to Disarm Without Turkish Preconditions

Barzani’s Appeal for PKK Disarmament

In a significant diplomatic move, Nechirvan Barzani, Prime Minister of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government, has urged the PKK to disarm and dissolve without waiting for any initiatives from the Turkish government. His comments came ahead of his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Ankara.

Ankara-Erbil Relations Amid Calls for a “Terror-Free Türkiye”

Barzani’s visit to Ankara on October 9 was primarily to discuss regional and global issues alongside bilateral relations between Ankara-Baghdad and Ankara-Erbil. The meeting reflects the intensified efforts of the Turkish government to establish a “terror-free Türkiye,” with expectations for the PKK to expedite its disarmament.

Insights from the Middle East Research Institute Forum

At a forum hosted by the Middle East Research Institute in Erbil, Barzani evaluated the current state of affairs between Ankara and Erbil, focusing on the PKK disarmament process. He recognized the commitment of Erdoğan and his administration to resolve the PKK issue, suggesting that the process might require courage and proactive measures from the PKK.

Encouraging PKK to Act Independently

Barzani emphasized the necessity for the PKK to take independent actions for the betterment of the disarmament process, proposing that it should not await the Turkish government’s initiatives. Highlighting the collaborative efforts, Barzani mentioned that the IKRG had offered support and consultation in the disarmament dialogue, signaling a historic opportunity for the Kurds.

Perspectives on Syrian YPG and Damascus Negotiations

In his remarks, Barzani also addressed the ongoing YPG-Damascus negotiations in Syria. He encouraged the YPG to participate actively in Syria’s political process and engage in discussions with Syrian authorities in Damascus, urging the PKK to disengage from northern Syria to maintain regional stability.
