Explosion at Bucksnort Explosives Plant Prompts Emergency Response

Emergency Services Respond to Bucksnort Explosion

Hickman County authorities are urging residents to stay away from the Bucksnort area following a significant explosion at an explosives manufacturing plant. The incident occurred at Accurate Energetic Systems, situated about an hour west of Nashville, near Interstate 40. “We can confirm there has been an explosion at Accurate Energetic Systems in the Bucksnort area,” stated the Hickman County Sheriff’s Office in a statement issued at 8:30 a.m. on October 10. Emergency services are actively working on-site to manage the situation.

Unknown Extent of Damage and Injuries

Details regarding the extent of the damage and any potential injuries remain unclear at this time. Officials are prioritizing emergency operations and have requested the public to limit non-urgent calls to both their office and 911. Residents are advised to avoid the vicinity and adhere to instructions provided by local authorities to ensure safety and facilitate emergency response efforts.

Impact on Local Infrastructure

The Tennessee Department of Transportation has closed State Route 230, also known as Tanyard Branch Road, located north of Interstate 40, to assist in handling the situation effectively. Local resident Beyonica Holt, from Nunnelly, reported feeling the explosion around 7:50 a.m. while preparing for work, saying, “I thought I was going to die. It knocked stuff off my shelves.” The blast was powerful enough to shake her house, although it did not break the windows.

Overview of Accurate Energetic Systems

Founded in 1980, Accurate Energetic Systems specializes in producing high-grade explosives for demolition and defense. According to the company’s statements, they manufacture products ranging from “linear shaped charges to claymore mines.” The facility spans 1,300 acres, housing eight production buildings and a quality control lab. The manufacturing process is conducted with environmental control systems for optimal quality of energetics and explosives.

Previous Explosions at the Site

This is not the first explosion at the Bucksnort facility. In April 2014, a tragic incident resulted in one fatality and three injuries when a building on the Accurate Energetic Systems property was destroyed by an explosion. Operated by Rio Ammunition at the time, the building was manufacturing ammunition for hunting, law enforcement, and military uses. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives conducted an extensive investigation into the 2014 explosion.
