European Clubs Embrace International Break
While many players enjoy a much-needed rest during international breaks, Atletico Madrid and Inter are set to engage in the friendly Reconstruction Cup in Libya. The match, played at the newly-renovated 42,000-capacity Benghazi International Stadium, showcases stars like Antoine Griezmann, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Koke, and Yann Sommer.
Background of the Match in Benghazi
Despite warnings from international governments about safety in Libya, both clubs have opted to participate in the game. The match results from an invitation by the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund (FDRL), overseen by Belgasem Haftar. This is not their first mid-season exhibition; in the past, Atletico has played exhibition games in regions like Singapore and Turkey.
Barcelona’s Decision to Decline
Barcelona was initially supposed to participate in the Reconstruction Cup, reportedly receiving €5 million for their involvement. However, due to security apprehensions and scheduling conflicts with youth teams, they opted out, returning the funds to the organizers. These logistical challenges were a significant factor in their decision-making process.
Libya’s Football Legacy
Football holds an undeniable popularity among Libya’s 7.5 million population, even though the national team hasn’t qualified for the World Cup. Libya’s history with football and politics is deep-rooted, with notable events like the Supercoppa Italiana being held in Tripoli in 2002.
Challenges in Libyan Football
The political landscape in Libya presents challenges, reflected in its domestic football league. The country’s division has led to separate competitions in the east and west, resulting in finals being hosted in Italy for safety reasons. Al Nasr Benghazi emerged victorious in the 2023-24 season, while Al Ahly of Tripoli are the current champions.
Reconstruction Efforts and Safety Concerns
The FDRL, prominently showcasing its initiatives, has invested in infrastructure projects in Libya, including the remodelling of the Benghazi International Stadium. Despite these efforts, safety remains a concern for international visitors. The U.S. State Department and other governments have advised against travel to Libya due to threats like terrorism and crime.
Minimal Ground Time for Clubs
Both Atletico Madrid and Inter plan to keep their Libyan stay brief, limiting their visits to the airport, hotel, and stadium. Despite this, Atletico remains unfazed about security, citing successful exhibitions held earlier this year in Benghazi with high-profile football stars.
