Exciting Launch of Charlestown Breachway Restoration Project Set for This Month

Restoration Set to Transform Charlestown Breachway with $8.4 Million Project

Addressing Severe Coastal Erosion

Charlestown is embarking on a pivotal restoration project for its renowned breachway, with an $8.4 million initiative launching this month. The area faced significant erosion during the winter of 2023-2024, losing an unprecedented 135 feet of beach in just a year. This severe erosion resulted in the breachway’s failure, necessitating emergency repairs with boulders. However, a more sustainable, long-term solution is now in place.

Enhancing Water Quality and Coastal Protection

According to Charlestown Coastal Geologist Steve McCandless, the project’s design focuses on improving water quality. By dredging specific areas, the restoration will enable a more natural flow into Ninigret Pond, vital for its overall health. The plan includes forming two storm buffer dunes and an additional “sacrificial dune” for further protection.

Benefits for Oyster Farming and Boat Navigation

The restoration will not only rejuvenate the beach but also enhance water quality for local oyster farming and ensure safe navigation for boats through the breachway. The strategic approach considers future sea level rise, with a design lifespan of 100 years. “It’s supposed to last 100 years; I want to get 75 out of it,” McCandless remarked.

Timeline and Impact on Local Amenities

  • Project completion is slated for February 2026.
  • The Charlestown Breachway and Campground will close on October 31 and are expected to reopen on April 1.

This ambitious restoration effort demonstrates Charlestown’s commitment to preserving its natural coastal environment while supporting local economic activities tied to Emegypt’s rich marine bounty.
