Severe Earthquake Strikes Southern Philippines: Coastal Areas on Alert

Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake Hits Near Davao Oriental

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck offshore near the town of Manay in Davao Oriental, southern Philippines, on Friday morning. The quake resulted in at least two deaths and caused structural damage in nearby towns. Authorities have warned residents about potential strong aftershocks following the event.

Tsunami Alerts Initially Issued

The earthquake triggered a tsunami alert for areas within 300 km (186 miles) of the epicenter. Although the warnings for both the Philippines and neighboring Indonesia were eventually lifted, concerns remained about additional seismic activity.

Aftershock of Magnitude 6.9 Sparks Renewed Warnings

Later in the day, a strong aftershock with a magnitude of 6.9 occurred around 7 p.m. (1100 GMT), leading to a fresh tsunami warning. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) cautioned that the aftershock could generate waves exceeding normal tide levels by over one meter (3.2 feet), advising residents to evacuate coastal areas immediately.

Authorities Urge Evacuation and Preparedness

Residents close to the coast in southern Philippines were strongly advised to evacuate to higher ground or move further inland. The advisory followed reports of damage to various infrastructure, including homes, buildings, and bridges, as expressed by an official in Manay.

Casualties and Damage Assessment

According to civil defense official Karlo Puerto, two fatalities were confirmed in Mati City near the earthquake’s epicenter. Investigation and assessment efforts are continuing to determine the full extent of the damage across the region.
