A recent poll from GrowSF, a tech-focused, politically moderate organization, revealed that two-thirds of San Francisco voters support the operation of fully autonomous vehicles within the city. This reflects a substantial increase from 2023, when less than half of the population expressed such support. Sachin Agarwal, GrowSF’s director, states that the earlier poll aimed to establish baseline attitudes towards the newer technology, while the latest survey evaluated changes following Waymo’s introduction last summer.

“This shift is astonishing,” Agarwal noted. “Autonomous vehicles represent the future, and this research demonstrates that firsthand experiences lead to greater openness towards this groundbreaking technology.” Enthusiasts like Alex Masmej, who have taken over 600 Waymo rides since 2023, emphasize their preference over traditional ride-sharing services like Uber.
Reasons Behind Growing Confidence in Autonomous Vehicles

According to Billy Riggs, the director of the Autonomous Vehicles and the City Initiative at the University of San Francisco, experiencing sophisticated autonomy results in quick and widespread adoption. “Our research highlights the swift comfort level people achieve after their first ride, appreciating the safety of this technology,” Riggs asserts.
Waymo’s Impact and Future Prospects in the Bay Area
Waymo’s recent research indicates that their fleet significantly outperforms human drivers in evading various collisions. Over six years and 56 million miles, Waymo vehicles reported 82% fewer incidents with bikers and motorcyclists and 92% fewer pedestrian accidents than human-driven cars. By June, Waymo’s vehicles had accumulated nearly 30 million miles in San Francisco, with parents increasingly opting for the service as a safe, autonomous chauffeur for their children.
Broadening Horizons: Expanding Autonomous Options
The autonomous landscape in the Bay Area is set to expand. Waymo recently obtained permission to operate at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), and its competitors are not far behind. Tesla’s semi-autonomous taxis, featuring safety drivers, operate throughout the Bay Area, from Marin to San Jose. Furthermore, Amazon-owned Zoox plans to launch its commercial robotaxi service in 2026, promising more options for tech-savvy commuters in San Francisco and beyond.
