Prime Video Cancels ‘Butterfly’ and ‘Countdown’ After Just One Season Each

Prime Video Cancels ‘Butterfly’ and ‘Countdown’ After First Seasons
Prime Video Cancels Series After Summer Debuts
Amazon’s Prime Video has decided not to renew two of its freshman series, ‘Butterfly’ and ‘Countdown.’ Despite their initial presence on the Nielsen top 10 U.S. streaming charts during the summer, both shows will not be returning for a second season. These cancellations mark a strategic shift for Amazon MGM Studios as they refine their content lineup.
‘Butterfly’: A Short-Lived Spy Thriller
‘Butterfly,’ starring Daniel Dae Kim, premiered with a binge-release format in August. The show, inspired by a graphic novel by Arash Amel and Marguerite Bennett, follows Kim’s character, a former U.S. intelligence agent, as he emerges from hiding in South Korea to assist his daughter, portrayed by Reina Hardesty. Despite its intriguing plot, the show only lasted two weeks on the Nielsen streaming charts.
‘Countdown’: A Detective Drama Starring Jensen Ackles
In contrast, ‘Countdown’ had a longer roll-out, beginning in June and wrapping up its 13-episode run in early September. Led by Jensen Ackles, the series follows an LAPD detective who joins a multi-agency task force to thwart a critical conspiracy. With a strong supporting cast including Jessica Camacho, Eric Dane, and Violett Beane, the show had a brief two-week chart presence but failed to maintain momentum.
Future Endeavors for Kim and Ackles
Both Daniel Dae Kim and Jensen Ackles hold first-look deals with Amazon MGM Studios, indicating future collaborations despite the current cancellations. Ackles will also appear in the upcoming ‘Vought Rising,’ a prequel to the hit series ‘The Boys.’
