Bike Racks to Be Temporarily Removed in Oxford City Centre for Half Marathon

Oxford Prepares for Half Marathon with Temporary Bike Rack Removal

This weekend, Oxford City Centre will see a temporary removal of bicycle racks to accommodate the upcoming half marathon. The cycle racks located on Broad Street and Parks Road, which currently offer around ten parking spaces for cyclists, will be taken out by Oxford Direct Services (ODS) as part of the event preparations.

Event Details and Temporary Adjustments

The Oxford Half Marathon, scheduled for October 12, has registered more than 13,000 participants. In anticipation of the event, ODS will begin removing and suspending bike racks on Broad Street and Parks Road starting at 6 a.m. on Saturday, October 11. Cyclists are advised to retrieve their bikes by Friday night, October 10, to avoid the removal process.

Impact on Cyclists and Reinstallation Plans

The city council has outlined plans to replace the bike racks early on Monday morning, October 13. Any remaining bicycles will have their locks cut and will be retained for 35 days before being donated. This measure ensures a smooth operation during the marathon and helps avoid potential inconveniences for cyclists.

New Route for Oxford Half Marathon

This year’s marathon introduces a newly designed route aimed at enhancing the experience for everyone involved, including runners, spectators, business owners, and city visitors. The key change includes a combined start and finish line on Mansfield Road, which aims to minimize disruption in Broad Street and reduce road closures. This adjustment is expected to alleviate congestion and streamline spectator movement in the area.
