Nearly as Poetic as Jacques Tati: Massive Traffic Jam Unfolds in China

Wuzhuang Toll Station Sees Massive Traffic Jam as China’s National Holiday Ends
Wuzhuang Toll Station in Anhui Faces Heavy Traffic
The Wuzhuang Toll Station, situated in China’s Anhui province, experienced a significant traffic jam as the national holiday concluded on October 7, 2025. Despite being one of the largest toll stations in China, with 36 lanes, it saw approximately 120,000 vehicles pass through, as reported by Chinese media. This heavy influx resulted in many motorists being stuck for hours before the traffic eventually normalized.
World’s Noteworthy Traffic Jams
Though Wuzhuang’s incident is noteworthy, it’s not the longest traffic jam recorded globally. In 2010, a congestion on the Chinese National Highway 110 saw drivers trapped for five days, benefiting local vendors who took advantage of the captive audience.
Similarly, in 2016, Indonesia experienced a three-day traffic jam stretching 20 kilometers, which tragically resulted in 12 fatalities due to traffic accidents between July 3 and July 5.
France Holds the Record for Longest Traffic Jam
While these incidents are significant, the Guinness World Record for the longest traffic jam goes to France. On February 16, 1980, a staggering 176 km of congestion was recorded between Lyon and Paris.
