Massive Pro-Palestine March Commemorates Two-Year Anniversary of Gaza Conflict

Pro-Palestine Protests Sweep London as Ceasefire Marks Two-Year Gaza War Milestone
Thousands Rally in London for Pro-Palestine Protest
In central London, thousands gathered to commemorate two years since the onset of the Gaza war, coinciding with a recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. The demonstration started on Victoria Embankment, featuring stalls selling keffiyehs and placards with messages like “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” The protest serves as a reminder of the ongoing tensions and desire for a peaceful resolution in the region.
Counter-Protests and Police Measures in Place
The Stop The Hate group organized a counter-protest at Aldwych and The Strand, prompting Scotland Yard to implement measures under the Public Order Act. These measures aim to prevent significant disruption and outline specific gathering areas and march routes for the protests. This is the 32nd national demonstration for Palestine since October 2023, organized by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC).
Government’s Response to Protest Activities
In light of repeated protests, the government announced new powers for police to restrict demonstrations, considering the cumulative impact of these activities. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood highlighted the distress caused to the Jewish community. Despite these announcements, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that existing laws remain unchanged for the time being.
Solidarity and Continued Advocacy for Palestine
Ben Jamal, director of PSC, emphasized the ongoing commitment to achieving a free Palestine, citing the UK government’s support of Israel and the need for continuous advocacy. He criticized Trump’s ceasefire plan for failing to address the root problems of Israeli occupation and apartheid.
Debate Over Chants and Slogans
The government is considering a crackdown on chants like “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” which some view as antisemitic. Proponents argue the slogan seeks an end to conflict in Gaza and the West Bank. This ongoing debate highlights the complexity of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Ceasefire Agreement and Future Implications
The ceasefire, initiated at noon local time on Friday, came after an agreement from Hamas to release hostages for Palestinian prisoners. The timing coincides with the second anniversary of the attacks by Hamas on Israel on October 7, raising questions about the ceasefire’s long-term viability and its ability to foster lasting peace in the region.
