Namibia Cricket Finds a Permanent Home in Windhoek, Fulfilling Long-Held Dreams

Namibia’s Cricket Landmark: A New Era Begins with the Opening of Namibia Cricket Ground
For the first time in history, Namibian cricketers now have a dedicated facility to train and play, marking a significant milestone for the sport in the country. The completion of the Namibia Cricket Ground (NCG) in August 2025 brings a new dimension to Namibian cricket, featuring a state-of-the-art indoor center and gym. Set in the heart of Windhoek, the country’s capital, the stadium is poised to host its inaugural international match between Namibia and South Africa, offering the most high-profile cricket fixture in Namibian history.
Namibia Cricket Ground: A Boost for Local Cricket
“This feels like a new dawn for our sport,” Namibia’s captain, Gerhard Erasmus, shared with Emegypt. “Having our first high-performance venue means players can now train at a central location rather than moving between different venues. It’s also a tremendous asset for the community.” Despite cricket not being the leading sport in Namibia, the excitement is palpable, with tickets for the event selling out rapidly. Fans donned in blue Namibia Eagles shirts signal a newfound enthusiasm for the game typically reserved for rugby and soccer.
A Strategic Location in Windhoek
NCG’s positioning in a sports-centered precinct of Windhoek is strategic, with streets like Netball Street and Rugby Street surrounding the locale. The new ground combines the feel of an expansive stadium with the intimacy of a club, featuring grass embankments and a main building within a lively sports area. Previously, Namibia’s cricket encounters were held at Wanderers, a multi-sport facility, which Erasmus previously described as less than ideal for a home base. “We’ve trained at Wanderers all our lives, but now we have a dedicated home close to other stadiums, which feels like a true refreshment.”
Cricket’s Ascent Amidst Other Sports’ Challenges
Remarkably, cricket is on the rise in Namibia at a time when other national sports teams face challenges. Namibia’s national rugby team was unable to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup for the first time in decades, while the football team is struggling in World Cup qualifiers. In contrast, the cricket team secured a fourth consecutive T20 World Cup qualification and performed outstandingly before a narrow loss to Zimbabwe. This successful run was marked by impressive scores, including maiden T20I centuries by JJ Smit and Jan Frylinck.
Adapting to New Strategies
The recent success in Zimbabwe can be attributed to both the new venue and a change in strategy under head coach Craig Williams. “The new management has relieved us of pressure, allowing for a more adaptive and calm atmosphere,” Erasmus noted. Namibian cricketers have enhanced their ability to construct innings, adding to their known strengths in power hitting. The need remains to translate this progress into the 50-over format, with Namibia striving for a spot in the 2027 ODI tournament across Southern Africa.
Qualifying for International Knowledge: A Crucial Step
With a chance to play in the 2027 World Cup still within reach, Erasmus emphasized the significance of the effort. “For Associate nations, qualification is crucial for staying relevant in world cricket,” Erasmus stated. Despite limited opportunities compared to Test nations, the importance of competing on the world stage cannot be overstated. Namibia remains determined to qualify and showcase their capabilities in a home World Cup, aiming to seize this opportunity for themselves and their growing fan base.
