Nor’easter and Tropical Storm Priscilla remnants pose US flooding threat

Severe Weather Threatens U.S. East Coast: High Winds and Flooding Expected
A powerful storm system is set to unleash high winds and potential flooding along the East Coast, stretching from South Carolina to New Jersey, over the holiday weekend. Although the storm itself is not classified as tropical, several tropical systems currently active in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are also influencing the weather patterns. Notably, Tropical Storm Jerry is tracking across the Atlantic, after inundating the northern Leeward Islands with heavy rain.
East Coast Braces for High Tides and Strong Winds
The unnamed storm has already made its presence felt in Charleston, South Carolina, where tidal floods forced the closure of approximately 36 roads. Friday morning saw the tide reach 8.46 feet, marking the 13th highest tide recorded in over a century for Charleston Harbor. Coastal communities in Georgia and Florida also faced temporary road closures due to tidal flooding.
Northerly winds continue to stir the Atlantic Ocean, leading to increased water over the North Carolina Outer Banks. Forecasts predict further issues throughout the weekend, potentially affecting Highway N.C. 12 on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands.
Atlantic and Pacific Storms Wreak Havoc
In the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Jerry has pivoted away from the northern Leeward Islands, though it left considerable damage in its wake. Rescuers in Guadeloupe found the body of a man carried away by floodwaters, with eight other individuals successfully rescued from two boats. The island, alongside Antigua, Barbuda, and Saint Maarten, experienced up to eight inches of rain, closing schools and government offices.
In the Pacific, Tropical Storm Raymond presents a looming threat to parts of Mexico, as warnings have been issued from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes, including Baja California Sur. The storm is expected to track parallel to the southwestern Mexican coastline before approaching the Baja region over the weekend.
Wind Warnings Issued for New York City
With the storm system moving northward, high wind alerts have been issued for New York City and Long Island. Gusts reaching up to 60 mph are predicted to hit on Sunday, prompting residents to prepare for potential disruptions. Delaware and New Jersey’s coasts are also on alert with warnings of major coastal flooding expected.
This advancing system, along with the existing tropical activities, underscores the critical need for vigilance and preparedness along the affected regions. Stay tuned to Emegypt for continuous updates on these developing weather conditions and their impact on communities.
