Mathew Barzal Shares Insights on Why the New York Islanders Could Become the Next Dallas Stars

Mathew Barzal Embraces New Challenges with New York Islanders
Mathew Barzal: Overcoming Injuries and Welcoming Change
Mathew Barzal is excited to discuss hockey again, despite the challenging times for the New York Islanders. Over the past four seasons, the team has struggled, missing the playoffs twice and exiting in the first round two times. They have also seen significant changes, including the departures of legendary coach Barry Trotz and Hall of Fame GM Lou Lamoriello, trading key players like Brock Nelson and Noah Dobson, and ushering in a rebuilding phase under new GM Mathieu Darche.
Barzal, sidelined by injury during the 2024-25 season, missed all of these developments. An upper-body injury benched him for 21 games, and later a knee injury ended his season prematurely after just 30 games. Reflecting on the difficult times, Barzal describes the psychological challenges of recovery and the support he received from teammates and family.
The Islanders’ Rebuilding Phase
Despite the team’s transitional phase, Barzal remains committed to the Islanders. Recent trades such as those of Nelson and Dobson brought in promising prospects like Cal Ritchie, Victor Eklund, and Kashawn Aitcheson. Additionally, winning the NHL Draft Lottery allowed them to select standout defenseman Matthew Schaefer as the first overall pick, sparking hope for the future.
While some veterans might be discouraged by a rebuilding period, Barzal sees potential in the team’s future. Drawing comparisons to successful franchises like the Dallas Stars, he envisions synergy between experienced players and emerging talents. “With myself, Bo Horvat, and some of the older guys, hopefully, these young kids can come in and be like the young players in Dallas,” Barzal states optimistically.
Returning to the Ice: Barzal’s New Role
Though still recovering, Barzal is eager to make an impact. His performance in the Islanders’ season opener is a testament to his determination, logging significant ice time and demonstrating his skills. “I love it here. I take pride in having been here my whole career and want to win here,” Barzal shares, emphasizing his dedication and loyalty to the team.
This season marks Schaefer’s debut, a young defenseman stepping directly into the NHL at 18. Barzal, understanding the pressures that come with such a transition, promises support for Schaefer as he adjusts. “He’s our younger brother. We’re here to take care of him,” assists Barzal in highlighting the team culture.
Looking Ahead: A Promising Future
As the Islanders incorporate new talents like Schaefer and potential star Cole Eiserman, Barzal remains optimistic about the future. He believes that with the right growth and team support, the Islanders will re-emerge as formidable contenders. For now, Barzal is simply thrilled to be back in action, relishing every moment on the ice and embracing the journey ahead.
