FA Cup Preview: Gainsborough Trinity Manager Russ Wilcox Targets New Upset Victory

Gainsborough Trinity Gears Up for FA Cup Challenge with Giant-Killing Experience
Gainsborough Trinity’s Road to Success in the FA Cup
Russ Wilcox’s Gainsborough Trinity is once again making waves in the FA Cup, drawing inspiration from last year’s remarkable performance. The NPL Premier team captured attention last season by reaching the second round in 2024-25, where their journey was halted by League Two’s Harrogate Town. Along the way, they scored notable victories over higher-league Darlington and Step 1 Boston United, as well as taking down Rushall Olympic, Chester, and York City in the Isuzu FA Trophy.
Facing Hartlepool United: A New Challenge
Wilcox, the former Scunthorpe United manager, is preparing his team for another significant test as they host Hartlepool United in the FA Cup’s fourth round qualifying. He expressed the importance of a home draw against a formidable opponent like Hartlepool, managed by the experienced Simon Grayson.
“Hartlepool is a big club with a seasoned manager. It’s going to be a challenge, especially given their strong defensive record in the National League,” Wilcox stated. “The pressure is off us now, and while we’re not expected to win, we’ve shown in the past that anything can happen in cup football.”
Reflecting on Past Successes
Gainsborough Trinity’s previous experiences in the FA Cup have been beneficial. Their first-round tie against Hednesford Town last term, which ended 4-4 before heading to an intense shoot-out, remains a highlight. “This is our 11th FA Cup game in the last two seasons. We’ve only lost one, and that was to Harrogate,” Wilcox mentioned. “The revenue we’ve gained has been invaluable for the club.”
Strong League Performance Offers Confidence
The Holy Blues are not only excelling in cup competitions but have also started their league campaign with strong momentum. Currently sitting in fourth place, Gainsborough Trinity has earned 19 points from 10 matches. Wilcox is optimistic about maintaining this pace to remain in the league’s top five.
“We’re thrilled with our start. Last season began differently, and we narrowly missed the play-offs,” said Wilcox. “We aim to stay consistent, ensure a better start, and maintain our position. It’s crucial for our continued success.”
As Gainsborough Trinity gears up for their encounter with Hartlepool United, the team remains humble yet ambitious, eager to continue their legacy of overcoming challenging opponents while climbing the ranks in both league and cup competitions.
