Snow Expected in Parts of Southern Alberta During Thanksgiving Weekend Forecast

Alberta’s Thanksgiving Weekend Weather Could Bring Snow and Cold Fronts

As Albertans prepare for the Thanksgiving weekend, traditionally seen as the last camping opportunity of the season, weather conditions might take an unexpected turn. This year, forecasts suggest a mix of snow and freezing rain could affect parts of the province, bringing a distinct chill to the long weekend.

Weather Patterns Across Alberta

The weekend kicks off with milder weather on Saturday. According to Emegypt meteorologist Mackenzie Mazankowski, temperatures will remain “comfortable” with the Calgary area expected to enjoy a pleasant fall day with highs in the mid-teens. Meanwhile, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat may experience slightly warmer conditions, with the mercury rising to the high teens or even low 20s.

Edmonton, however, should anticipate a different scenario. A cold front will move in on Saturday morning, bringing showers or light rain with a high of around 10 degrees.

Cold Front Impacts on Calgary

The cold front is projected to move south to the Calgary area by Saturday afternoon, causing temperatures to dip. “Calgary will likely experience light afternoon showers with precipitation between 1 to 2 millimetres, transitioning into flurries by evening,” Mazankowski explained. Snowfall may peak in the late afternoon or early evening.

Though Calgary might see up to a centimeter of snow on Saturday and slightly more overnight, Mazankowski thinks it won’t linger long due to the ground’s warmth.

Significant Snowfall in Mountain Regions

Conditions west of Calgary tell a different story. The mountain parks and foothill areas could experience snow accumulations ranging from 10 to 15 centimeters at higher elevations, posing challenges for those planning outdoor activities.

Looking Ahead to Next Week

Sunshine is expected to return to most of Alberta by Monday, although cooler temperatures will persist. Edmonton may see highs of 4 degrees Celsius, while Calgary should prepare for conditions near the freezing mark. However, a warm-up is on the horizon; by late week, both Edmonton and Calgary are forecast to experience temperatures rebounding to the mid to high teens, restoring more typical fall weather.
