Milwaukee exhibits vibrant street art celebrating its beloved sports teams, particularly during the playoff season. This creative expression is evident through captivating murals like William Contreras’ portrait in Black Cat Alley and “El Paletero” in Walker’s Point.

Milwaukee Artists Unite for Brewers’ Playoff Journey

In the Walker’s Point neighborhood, a striking mural named “El Paletero” captures attention on the side of Heavy Hitters Athletic Facility. It illustrates a popsicle vendor adorned with a Milwaukee Brewers hat, pushing his cart through the Brewers logo, symbolizing a journey through the city. This artistic piece is the brainchild of Michael Cerda.

From Childhood Memories to Artistic Expression

Michael Cerda, who grew up on Milwaukee’s South Side, draws inspiration from his Mexican American heritage. “It just screams my childhood,” Cerda expressed, recalling the cheerful tinkling of bells heralding the paletero’s arrival in his neighborhood. Although his initial dream was to become a baseball player, art ultimately became his passion.

  • Michael Cerda’s parents immigrated from Mexico.
  • He grew up a Brewers fan and attended games with his father.
  • “El Paletero” was created as part of the Brewers’ #BeyondTheDiamond program.

“I always wanted to paint an iconic figure of a paletero,” Cerda noted, emphasizing the personal significance and hope that it would make his father proud. Collaborating with the Brewers gave him this opportunity.

Art and Team Spirit Aligned

Brent Schoonover, originally from Milwaukee and current Minnesota resident, along with suburban artist Hannah Tews, contributed to the city’s sports-themed murals. They showcased a mural of William Contreras in Black Cat Alley, fueling the Brewers’ successful playoff bid.

  • The mural was painted during the summer by Hannah Tews.
  • The Brewers secured first place shortly after its completion.

For Tews, who is a fervent Brewers fan, the team’s performance adds a layer of excitement to their artwork. “The players are bringing it. The coaching team is phenomenal,” remarked Tews. Both artists hope their contributions will inspire a journey from these artistic displays to a World Series victory.
