Emmitt Finnie Expresses Gratitude for Exciting Opportunity with Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings are gearing up for their centennial season, kicking off with a matchup against their historic rival, the Montreal Canadiens. This significant campaign marks 100 years of the franchise in Detroit, filled with excitement and new talent. Among the newcomers are Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, Axel Sandin-Pellikka, and Emmitt Finnie. All three have earned spots on the roster for Opening Night after impressing coaches and management during Training Camp.
Emmitt Finnie: A New Era for the Red Wings
Emmitt Finnie, selected 201st overall in 2023, is set to make his NHL debut on the first line alongside team captain Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond. Finnie expressed his excitement upon learning he made the cut, reflecting on the blend of nerves and anticipation he felt.
“I just came to the rink and found out I was going to be in the lineup,” Finnie said. “There was lots of excitement and nerves, but I’m happy it all worked out.”
Support from Family
Finnie will have a strong support system in the stands for his inaugural game, including his parents, siblings, girlfriend, and other relatives. “I’ve got my mom and dad, brother, sister, my girlfriend, aunt, uncle, and his wife coming to support me,” he mentioned.
Impressive Performance in Training Camp
Finnie stood out during Training Camp and pre-season, participating in seven of eight games. He showcased not only his speed but also his willingness to tackle challenging situations on the ice, an impressive trait for someone so young. Head coach Todd McLellan utilized Finnie in various scenarios, underscoring his versatility.
“I bring a high motor and feel like a 200-foot player,” Finnie explained. “I have lots of speed, so I can impact the game in many ways.”
Embracing Red Wings History
Recognizing the historical significance of the franchise, McLellan encouraged younger players to delve into Red Wings history. Although Finnie was just a toddler when the Red Wings last secured the Stanley Cup in 2008, he has taken time to learn about the team’s glorious past.
“I’m pretty familiar with it from watching highlights,” Finnie shared. “The Red Wings were a dominant team with legendary players. It’s our expectation to return to that level.”
A Special Opportunity
Starting his NHL career during the Red Wings’ 100th year is not lost on Finnie. “It’s very special. The Winged Wheel is a historic logo, and wearing it is an honor,” he stated. “I’m super honored to be in this position.”
