Sharks Owner Criticizes Karlsson for Lacking Team-Friendly Attitude

San Jose Sharks owner Hasso Plattner recently expressed disappointment towards Erik Karlsson, critiquing his team-oriented approach. This came during a rare media session on Thursday.

Plattner’s Comments on Rebuilding

Plattner discussed the organization’s decision to rebuild in 2022. This led to Karlsson’s transfer to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2023. He mentioned that rebuilding was his aim five years ago. The Sharks acquired Karlsson in a 2018 trade with the Ottawa Senators to enhance their Stanley Cup prospects. However, the team failed to reach the playoffs in four of his five seasons.

Karlsson’s Performance and Injuries

Karlsson’s stint with the Sharks was marred by injuries. His sole injury-free season came in 2022-23, during which he amassed 101 points and won the Norris Trophy. Despite his individual success, the Sharks finished 29th in the league that year. Plattner acknowledged Karlsson’s skills but criticized his lack of a team-friendly attitude.

Criticism of Poor Drafting

Plattner attributed the decision to rebuild partly to inadequate drafting. He also touched upon Doug Wilson’s health challenges, which affected the former general manager’s tenure. Wilson led the Sharks for 19 seasons before resigning.

Impact of Doug Wilson Jr.’s Scouting

Position From To
Director of Scouting 2018-19 2021-22

Plattner expressed dissatisfaction with Doug Wilson Jr., who served as Director of Scouting from 2018-19 to 2021-22. Despite previous success in drafting, the Sharks’ capabilities diminished under Wilson Jr.’s leadership. Currently, only William Eklund, the 2021 No. 7 pick, has become a regular NHL player. Wilson Jr. has since joined the Seattle Kraken as an amateur scout.

Plattner’s comments reflect a mix of regret and determination to steer the Sharks back to competitive success.
