Box Office Struggles: ‘Tron’ Faces Major Setback with $35M-$37M Opening as ‘Roofman’ Anticipates Modest $8M Debut

Disney’s latest installment in the Tron series, titled Tron: Ares, faces challenges at the domestic box office. The film opened with earnings of $14.3 million on Friday. Initial estimates suggest a total opening range between $35 million and $37 million, which falls short of earlier expectations.
Box Office Struggles for ‘Tron: Ares’
Despite securing the top spot over the weekend, Tron: Ares has underperformed against projections that indicated a possible debut of $40 to $45 million. As of now, reviews remain mixed. Rotten Tomatoes shows a 57% rating from critics, while audiences give a more favorable score of 86%.
The film, directed by Norwegian Disney veteran Joachim Rønning, cost an estimated $180 million to produce. It follows on the heels of Tron: Legacy, which launched 15 years ago with a $44 million debut. The cast includes Jared Leto as Ares, Greta Lee as ENCOM’s CEO Eve Kim, and Evan Peters as the antagonist Julian Dillinger.
Modest Opening for ‘Roofman’
Meanwhile, Roofman, distributed by Miramax and Paramount, secured a more modest performance with a Friday return of $3.3 million. The romantic crime-caper comedy, helmed by Derek Cianfrance, is set to garner around $8 million for its opening weekend. The film stars Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst and was developed with a modest budget of $19 million.
Audience Reception and Demographics
Interestingly, the movie was positioned as counter-programming for female audiences, yet males have shown more interest so far. Roofman enjoys strong critical acclaim with an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to an audience score of 88%. Both Tron and Roofman received a B+ rating from CinemaScore.
